As we celebrate pride month this June, it is important to not only celebrate, but also reflect on the past, consider the hardships the LGBTQ+ community has gone through, and provide support. There are significant and unjust health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community resulting from stigma, prejudice, harassment, discrimination, family rejection, and the denial of civil and human rights. This community suffers from higher rates of psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, suicide, and is three times more likely to experience a mental health condition. Youth are four times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts than youth that identify as straight and 37% of the LGBTQ+ community have a mental illness.

It is no secret that these statistics speak volumes about the adversity and hardship that this community endures. Help to spread awareness of the importance of mental health among the LGBTQ+ community and share resources with those who need it.

Mental Health Resources:

This month, and always, let us reflect on how we can become an ally to the LGBTQ+ family and work toward a world where everyone can live their truth freely and equally. This will not only require law, politics, and business to move toward justice but culture and society must continue to take steps toward a more equitable world. Doing this work can be emotionally investing, so it’s important to remember that you also take care of your own mental health, because if you are not well, you cannot help others. Take time during pride month and reflect on how to support the LGBTQ+ community.
