Borderline personality disorder affects how a person feels about themself and how they relate to others, causing problems functioning in everyday life. This disorder includes self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and a pattern of unstable relationships.

One major symptom of borderline personality disorder is suicidal ideations or self-injury, which are often the response to the fear of separation or rejection. Individuals with borderline personality disorder are fifty times more likely than the general public to attempt or die by suicide.

There is no specific medication for treating borderline personality disorder. Most treatments are geared towards helping the individual learn skills to manage and cope with their condition. It is also necessary to treat other mental health disorders that often occur along with borderline personality disorder, such as depression.

Recently researchers have wondered if ketamine could help patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. An ongoing study, funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is looking at the effectiveness of ketamine for reducing suicidality and improving social functioning among individuals affected by borderline personality disorder.

Ketamine has already demonstrated its ability to be an effective treatment for major depression and suicidal thinking. Ketamine treatments have been found to significantly reduce suicidal thoughts in individuals battling depression in as little as one day.

This treatment is also catching researchers’ attention for its potential to promote new connections between neurons. As borderline personality disorder is marked by a high degree of emotional instability and social dysfunction, ketamine could potentially open the door for behavior pattern changes. This breakthrough could alter symptoms that are seen as socially disruptive.

The study conducted by Sarah Fineberg, M.D., Ph.D., is ongoing but very promising that ketamine will be a viable treatment for borderline personality disorder. Currently, there has been a lot of excitement around ketamine, but more solid data needs to be collected to ensure the best application for this drug.
