A recent study showed that women who suffer from severe migraine headaches are less inclined towards getting pregnant. Their migraines are bad enough to hold these women back from becoming mothers. Migraines are one of the most major disabilities affecting women who are around the child-bearing age. Clearly, it’s taking a toll on this population.

In a survey of 607 women with severe migraines, one in five said that they are avoiding pregnancy because of their headaches. Amongst the group of women who said they are avoiding pregnancy due to migraines, 73% said they think their migraines will be worse during pregnancy and 83% think their migraines would make raising children too hard. These women are also worried that their migraines would affect their child’s genetics and development.

The study, published in the Mayo Clinic Journal, showed that women who avoided pregnancy due to migraines were also more likely to have a history of depression and anxiety. They also had more migraines per month than most other women suffering from migraines.

If you are suffering from severe migraines, here are some holistic options that may help with migraine relief:

  1. Change of diet. Processed foods, wine, or caffeine can sometimes trigger a migraine.
  2. Get enough sleep, at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
  3. Manage stress. Stress is often a trigger for migraines, so it’s good to integrate some self-care practices, like meditation, journaling, and a good workout routine.
  4. Stretching and yoga. Both activities can calm down your central nervous system and reduce the frequency of migraine headaches.

Ketamine infusions are another option that can be incredibly effective for those with migraine headaches, especially those who also struggle with anxiety or depression. Ketamine has been proven quite effective for the relief of migraines, with relief in just 1-2 infusions. However, not all people are candidates for ketamine infusions.
